The Center for Facilitating Research and Innovation in Organizations, better known as CEFRIO, has unveiled, in partnership with ICEQ (the E-commerce Index in Quebec), new e-commerce figures for 2019.

The figures mentioned below are from an official survey of monthly online purchases made by Quebec adults aged 18 and over from May 2018 to April 2019.

What are the most successful activities on the web?

The percentages indicated represent the number of people who made a purchase in the month prior to the survey (between May 2018 and April 2019) out of 100 people in the same category.

The top 3 sectors with the largest online market are clothing, shoes, jewelry, and accessories (38%), food, health, and beauty (21%), and electronics (21%).

Here is the top 3 websites for these 3 markets, and as you can see, the American Amazon is number 1 in all markets:

Favorite activities of men / women

What sectors do women constitute a large majority of online customers?

Not much surprise at this level, clothing, shoes, jewelry, and accessories (46%), food, health, and beauty (26%), and decoration / home (20%) are the top 3 markets where women are the clear majority of customers online.

For clothing and shoes, the average order amount is $123 for women, and 32% of orders are placed with Quebec companies.

What sectors do men constitute a large majority of online customers?

Not much surprise for men either, electronics (26%), travel and transportation (20%), and music, movies, and video games (20%) are the top 3 markets where men are the clear majority of customers online.

In electronics, a quarter (25%) of purchases are computers. And only 13% of purchases are made from Quebec companies, while 45% are made from American companies.

Favorite activities of the younger and older generations

What sectors do certain age groups represent the majority of online customers?

Nearly triple the 18-34 age group (28%) consume music, movies, and video games online compared to 55 and older (11%) (almost double for 35-54 year olds – 20%).

18-34 year olds consume 5 times more online baby items (5%) than 35-54 year olds (1%) or 55 and older (1%).

The 2 markets where each age group represents a clear majority: 18-34 years: Music/Movies/Video Games & Baby Items; 35-54 years: Sports Articles and Subscriptions & Electronics; 55 and older: Shows/Outings/Restaurants & Decoration/Home

Surprisingly, twice as many 55 and older (4%) consume software and applications compared to 18-34 year olds (2%).

It can also be noted that a clear majority of consumers of home decoration and products are over 35 years old. On the contrary, it is the under 35 age group that makes up the majority of online consumers of clothing, shoes, jewelry, and accessories.

Favorite activities according to the incomes of Quebecers

Quebecers with incomes over $80,000 dominate the ranking of online buyers in almost all sectors of activity.

A notable difference can be observed in the “Travel and Transportation” and “Sports Articles and Subscriptions” sectors where more than double the people with incomes over $80,000 consume online compared to incomes below $40,000.
